As of January 2026, the Keep Out the Rain program is beginning to wind down. However, current and past participants are encouraged to continue contacting the project hotline, 816-513-0200, with questions or concerns.

What is the Keep Out the Rain Program?

Did you know your sewer connections could be contributing to overflows and basement backups in your neighborhood? City law prohibits certain connections, sucas rain gutters, down spouts, basement and driveway sump pumps, and yard area drains because they place a high flow burden on the City’s separate sanitary sewer system causing sewer overflows and backups. Removing these connections and redirecting rainwater to flow naturally to storm sewers and waterways, rather than into our separate sewer system can reduce overflows and sewer backups.

Keep Out the Rain was a voluntary, limited-time program to help residents find and fix prohibited connections at no cost to the property owner. In addition to bringing peace of mind, participated helped reduce wastewater treatment costs and basement backups in your neighborhood, making our entire community rain ready.
