Active Smart Sewer Projects
Smart Sewer projects are happening every day across Kansas City. Click the buttons below to view information about each active project. Information about future and completed projects can be found below.
Future Projects
By 2040, the Smart Sewer program will have completed more than 100 sewer improvement projects throughout Kansas City. To meet our goals outlined in the Consent Decree, the second half of the program will include:
- Constructing green infrastructure features such as bioretention basins and permeable surfaces to manage stormwater
- Repairing portions of our separate sewer system to prevent rainwater and groundwater from leaking into wastewater pipes
- Upgrading pump stations and treatment facilities to handle more wastewater, especially during heavy rains
- Installing additional relief sewers to improve capacity in targeted areas of the city
- Expanding treatment capacity at the Blue River Wastewater Treatment Plant, including new facilities to improve disinfection and treat more wastewater during storms
