KC Water is working to construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood, including separation of the combined sewer system into separate storm and sanitary sewers. Green infrastructure opportunities will also be identified as part of these improvements. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of the wastewater collection system and lessen the frequency of sewer overflows into local waterways and the potential for basement backups.

What are the project boundaries?

  • North: 36th Street
  • South: East 43rd Street
  • East: Benton Boulevard
  • West: Spruce Avenue

What’s being done?

KC Water's improvements include:

  • Building new sanitary sewer infrastructure and storm sewer infrastructure including pipes, manholes, private sewer adjustments/connections, manholes/junction structures, and abandonment of existing infrastructure.

  • Green infrastructure installation including under drains and engineered soils and plantings.

  • Rehabilitation and repair work of existing infrastructure including sewer mains, private laterals, and manholes.

  • Parking lot improvements and reconstruction of the existing Second Baptist Church parking lot.

Why separate the sewers?

In your area, one sewer pipe carries both wastewater and stormwater, known as a combined sewer system. When it rains, stormwater can overload the combined sewer system, which is designed to discharge diluted wastewater directly into local waterways. For this project, KC Water will install a second piping system to separate stormwater and wastewater flows, helping to reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways. This improves water quality while protecting our natural environment and public health.

What’s the timeline?

Design began in May 2019 and was completed in 2023. Construction began in spring 2024.

Why is Green Infrastructure part of this?

Green infrastructure is designed to capture stormwater before it enters the sewer system, filter pollutants, and absorb stormwater into the soil. This helps to supplement traditional stormwater management, reducing downstream runoff, and making room in the sewer system. Green infrastructure is also a starting place for other important community improvements, including replacement of sidewalks, expanding the tree canopy, and creating new amenities that benefit your community!

Who’s doing the work?

KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, its design professional, HDR Engineering Inc. along with the construction contractor, Infrastructure Solutions.

What’s the contract amount?

The budget for construction is $26,400,000.
