KC Water is working to design and construct important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood. This project will include the installation of two weir storage facilities. KC Water originally identified three potential sites for this project but narrowed the focus to the first and third locations. When complete, the project will improve the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways and the potential for basement backups.

What’s being done?

Improvements to the wastewater system include installation of two weir storage facilities. These storage facilities will allow the City to control the water level within a 2.5 mile radius. This will help reduce combined sewer overflows. The sites were strategically selected to provide temporary storage during high rain events until the wastewater treatment facility recovers from these events.

What’s the timeline?
Design began in October 2024. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026.

KC Water will be assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, and its design professional, Black & Veatch.

What’s the contract amount?

The budget for the design portion of this project is approximately $3,623,000. 

Why are we doing this?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The OK Creek Additional Storage Facilities Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2027.
