KC Water constructed important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood. The project rehabilitated sewer mains, service lateral connections, and manholes in your area to like-new conditions. Now complete, the project has improved the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduce the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways.

What work was done?

Improvements to the wastewater system in this area included:

• 12,100 linear feet of sewer main replacement
• Rehabilitation of 170 service lateral connections
• Rehabilitation or replacement of up to 690 manholes

What was the timeline?

Construction began in November 2022 and was completed in January 2024. 

Who did the work?

KC Water was assisted by its program manager, Taliaferro and Browne; its design professionals, Jacobs Engineering Group and Olsson; and its construction contractor, She Digs It.

What was the contract amount?

The total budget for this project was approximately $5,909,177. 

Why are we doing the work?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Middle Blue River Area 13 Inflow & Infiltration Reduction Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program, and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 31, 2026.
