KC Water constructed important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood, including the rehabilitation of sewer mains, service lateral connections, and manholes to like-new conditions. Now complete, the project has improved the capacity of the wastewater collection system and reduced the volume of sewer overflows into local waterways.

The construction of this project included rehabilitation and/or replacement of approximately:

• 31,000 linear feet of sewer main
• 470 service lateral connections
• 370 manholes

What was the timeline?

Construction began in June 2024 and was completed in September 2025.

KC Water was assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell, its design professional, GBA, and its construction contractor, Havens Construction. 

What was the contract amount?

The total budget for this project was approximately $7,400,000.

What’s the Consent Decree?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Northern Basins Area 1 Inflow & Infiltration Reduction Project was one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program and is required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2027.
