KC Water constructed important improvements to the wastewater system in your neighborhood to improve flow to the Blue River Interceptor Sewer. Now complete, the project has improved the capacity of system and reduced the volume of sewer overflows from Outfall 055 into the Blue River.

What work was done?

Construction of this project included installing new sanitary and combined sewers to reduce the volume of combined sewer overflows at Outfall 055 into the Blue River.

What is an outfall?

Outfalls are located where sewer contents exit the system and enter the environment. Kansas City manages and maintains more than 80 combined sewer outfalls.

What was the timeline?

Construction began in February 2024 and was completed in August 2024.

KC Water was assisted by its program manager, Burns & McDonnell; its design professional, Dubois Consultants; and its construction contractor, Infrastructure Solutions.

What was the contract amount?

The total contract amount for design and construction of this project was approximately $1,475,000.

What’s the “Consent Decree”?

In 2010, the City of Kansas City, Missouri entered into a federal Consent Decree with the United States Environmental Protection Agency to reduce the volume of overflows from the City’s sewer system. KC Water’s Smart Sewer program is a 30-year effort to address this challenge. The Dry Weather Sewer Line: Outfall 055 Project is one of more than 100 projects being implemented by the Smart Sewer program and  was required by the Consent Decree to be completed by December 2024.
